Japan upset Germany to advance to Wednesday’s semi finals.

"I am so happy. We all fought together until the end," Karina Maruyama said. "It was not my success, but that of the whole team."

Maruyama came in as a substitute and kicked the only goal of the game.

Germany had not lost a World Cup game going back to a quarterfinal defeat to the U.S. in 1999.

For Japan, this is an emotional win for a country that has been devastated by the March earthquake and tsunami.

After the game, the Japanese players united behind a Japanese banner saying, "To our friends around the world -- Thank you for your support," recognizing the global aid in the wake of the deadly earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March.

Sweden, meanwhile, scored two goals in the first 16 minutes of its win over Australia.  Six of Sweden's first-half shots came from inside the box, including both goals.

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
