In the second heavyweight bout on UFC 146’s main card, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will take on big Antonio Silva.
In Velasquez’s last fight he surrendered the heavyweight belt to Junior dos Santos in a quick first-round knockout. At 6-foot-1, Velasquez is a former All-American collegiate wrestler who uses those techniques as the base of his generally well-rounded attack. Like Velasquez, Silva is coming off a loss via knockout, this time to Daniel Cormier. He has shown he can beat top opponents, however, with a victory over Fedor Emelianenko prior to that. Additionally, at 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, he holds a height and size advantage over his opponent in this fight. Interestingly though, it may be Silva who wants to take this brawl to the ground, as Cain’s agility and smarts will lend themselves better to wearing away at his opponent while on his feet. But, if Silva can remain patient and entice Cain into making poor decisions, an upset is not out of the question in this fight.
Prior to losing to Dos Santos, Velasquez had won all nine of his career fights, winning the heavyweight title from Brock Lesnar with a first-round TKO in the bout before that. Of Velasquez’s nine career victories, eight have come as knockouts. A wrestler and Jiu Jitsu artist, he is traditionally grounded in a takedown-based game, but has come on effectively as a striker, which may be his best route to victory in this bout, especially with Silva’s recent KO loss. He also may have a good scouting report as a gym teammate of Cormier’s. But the odds don’t match the value here, so play against.
Before losing to Cormier, Silva had won three consecutive fights, beating Emelianenko, Mike Kyle and Andrei Arlovski. Notably, however, this will be Silva’s first UFC fight. Like Velasquez, knockouts are his primary method of victory with 11 of his 16 career wins coming that way. Although he is a heavy underdog in this bout, he is among the top heavyweights in the world and may have the chance to fight for the belt if he can come out on top here.
