French Open History

The French Open began back in 1891 with the men's tournament and six years later the women's tournament was added. It is the only tournament on clay of the Grand Slam events so there are clay court specialists who do well in this event. There have also been some great players who never won this event including Pete Sampras.

Clay Court

Because the clay slows down the ball and produces a high bounce, the French Open is different than the other Grand Slam events. Serve and volley players have all kinds of trouble on clay. In addition to Sampras never winning the French Open, other players like John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Martina Hingis never won at Roland Garros.
