‘Wailing’ Maria Sharapova Upset at Wimbledon: Opponent Sabine Lisicki Now Pays

In a shock upset, Maria Sharapova has been knocked out of Wimbledon by 50/1 long shot Sabine Lisicki.  Serena Williams at 3/1 odds and Petra Kvitova at +450 (4.5/1) are the only former Wimbledon champions still alive on the female side.

Lisicki, the world No. 15, had top seed Sharapova on the back foot early in the first set, forcing her into a string of uncharacteristic errors, and did not let up until she had gained revenge for her semi-final defeat by the Russian last year.

Lisicki, who had complained about her second-round opponent Bojana Jovanovski's grunting, was forced to endure Sharapova's loud wails.

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
