The Panthers vs. Bucs betting line had Tampa Bay as a -2.5 home favorite vs. one of the biggest surprises of last season. ALERT - The line was at -3.5 as of Noon EST following news that Cam Newton was expected not to start 70% of those betting this game were backing Tampa Bay. The line on this game actually opened at -3 Carolina back in the Spring.
Carolina has since lost some key players during the post season so expectations are somewhat down. Worst still, starting quarterback Cam Newton is dealing with a hairline rib fracture and is listed as questionable as of Saturday evening. Questionable or not, one can only fear he won’t be himself Sunday regardless.
Say what you will about new Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith. He’s bound to bring improvements to this Buccaneers squad right off the bat. This is, after all, a coach who was canned by Chicago following a 10-6 season.
These two teams have alternated sweeps over the past five seasons, which is a pretty amazing trend. The team that won was the team that covered the spread as well. The favorite is 6-1 Against The Spread in this series.
The Panthers are 2-9 Against The Spread in season openers.
