Verlander's dominant performance against the Pirates was his longest outing of the season and came on the heels of a 10-strikeout effort in a win at Baltimore in his previous turn.

Griffin's vulnerability to the long ball surfaced again when he surrendered three homers and was charged with four runs and five hits over five innings of a road setback against the New York Mets a week ago.

Indians-Twins – PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (4-5, 4.15 ERA) vs. Twins RH Bartolo Colón (4-9, 6.77)

Since returning from a seven-week stint on the disabled list, Salazar has permitted four runs in four starts but is 1-0 in the span.

After losing his season debut with the Twins on July 18 to run his losing streak to five consecutive starts, the 44-year-old is unbeaten in his last four turns with Minnesota. He again turned back the clock last time out, pitching seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball at Milwaukee to win his second straight start.

Braves-Rockies - PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Sean Newcomb (1-7, 4.45 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (11-7, 3.70)

Four of the last five games in this series played in Colorado have resulted in fewer than 11 runs.  The current total is 11.5.

Newcomb allowed three runs (two earned), five hits and one walk while striking out six in six innings of a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday. The 24-year-old Massachusetts native has been better away from home - he's 1-0 with a 3.43 ERA in four road starts.
