Stanford Cardinal -6.5

Iowa Hawkeyes +6.5

Total: 53.5

Stanford Cardinal 11-2 SU, 9-4 ATS

The Cardinal won their final three games of the regular season but they missed out on going to the College Football Playoffs. They should have plenty of motivation though as they get to play in the Rose Bowl. The Cardinal feature a potent offense led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Christian McCaffrey. He led the country with 3,496 all-purpose yards and broke Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season record. The Cardinal scored 37 points per game this season while allowing 23 points per contest. They went over the total 7 times and under the total 6 times in their 13 games.

Iowa Hawkeyes 12-1 SU, 7-5-1 ATS

Normally a team that lost out on going to the College Football Playoffs would have a letdown but that might not be the case for Iowa. The Hawkeyes were beaten by Michigan State but at least they get to play in the Rose Bowl. The Hawkeyes are very good on defense and they are better on offense than expected. Iowa allowed just over 18 points per game this season but they didn’t face many offenses as potent as Stanford’s. The offense scored 32 points per game led by second-team All-Big Ten quarterback C.J. Beathard. The Hawkeyes went over 7 times this season, under 5 times with 1 push.

Before football was even being seen as a sport worth even hosting, you could have bet on the ostrich races, or maybe some chariot races. Football was introduced to the Rose Bowl Stadium in 1902, but it was absent for 14 years afterwards after an unsuccessful opening game. Michigan beat Stanford 49 - 0 and that was thought to be the last time the sport would ever be played here again.

In 1916, with the growth of sports in America, they decided to bring back the game, but then learned how to utilize the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade to take place before the game, leading to what became a tradition. Since 1945, the Rose Bowl has been the highest-attended college football bowl game.

Northwestern Mutual became the 6th all-time sponsor of the Rose Bowl, and they are contracted through the 2020 season. The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association had held the first rights. Not until 1999 did the game actually restart sponsoring the event, when AT&T bought the rights. Sony, Citibank, and Vizio are the only other businesses to sponsor the game.
