Sportsbook RFPs love a big number. Sixty sports, ninety, "everything". Then launch week arrives and someone on the product team notices the in-play markets for the Turkish basketball league are thin.
A line from the Argentina edition of Uplatform's Zoom In series says it better than I can: "Don't evaluate sportsbook providers by the number of sports they offer. Evaluate them by depth of football coverage, live-betting performance, and market availability during peak events."

How does the betting mix change between pre-match and live?
Football leads pre-match everywhere, then loses ground in-play. In Turkey its share falls from 78.8% of pre-match handle to 55.1% live, while basketball climbs from 14.5% to 24.1%. Argentina moves from 72% to 58%, with tennis rising to 20%. Malaysia shows the widest swing of the three: 70% pre-match, 32% live.
The reasons differ by country. Turkish basketball has real pull, driven by Fenerbahçe, Anadolu Efes and EuroLeague nights. Table tennis barely registers pre-match there, yet takes about 2% of live handle thanks to its short event cycles.
Argentina is football first, second and third (Liga Profesional, the Superclásico, Copa Libertadores), with tennis and basketball filling the gaps between fixtures.
Malaysia is the odd one. Cricket goes from 6% of pre-match handle to 14% live, and during the IPL, roughly March to June, live cricket comes close to football. Badminton is the reverse: about a quarter of players follow it, but few bet on it. The report calls it under-monetized.
What should you ask a sportsbook software provider?
Ask about depth, speed and timing. Depth means in-play markets on the leagues your players follow. Speed means odds updates and latency when traffic peaks. Timing means CRM that reacts to fixtures. Four questions cover most of it:
- How deep is coverage in the leagues these players actually watch? A match-result line alone proves little; look for player and in-play markets.
- How fast do odds update on a derby night? Peak fixtures are the real load test.
- Do streaming and live stats work inside the mobile bet slip? In Turkey, 56% of active players bet at home in the evening, mostly on phones.
- Can CRM campaigns trigger off the fixture calendar instead of fixed dates?
