After reaching the ALCS for the first time in 24 years and losing a heartbreaking Game 7 to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Seattle Mariners entered this season as the second-favorites behind the New York Yankees to win the American League pennant.
Instead, the entire season went straight into the "Big Dumper"—much like the production of their star catcher. Cal Raleigh, who looked unstoppable during his 60-home run campaign, collapsed to a .182 batting average with just 23 homers.
When a team fails this spectacularly, the manager is almost always the one shown the door. Dan Wilson—who was by far the nicest baseball player I covered during my years in Seattle (don't even get me started on Jay Buhner)—was informed he won’t be returning as the M's skipper next season.
