Iowa State Cyclones NCAA Tournament 2023

The Cyclones finished the season 19-13 straight up and at .500 Against The Spread and entered the NCAA tournament as a No. 6 seed against Pittsburgh.

The Cyclones lost four games in a row at the end of February before Cyclones coach T.J. Otzelberger dismissed starting guard Caleb Grill, the team's third-leading scorer, for "a failure to meet program expectations."

They were not looking like a good bet in their first game against Pittsburgh, and that proved to be the case.

The Panthers beat ISU badly, 59-41.

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
