Everyone is suddenly hating on Xavier Becerra this week.

Polls show the former Health and Human Services Secretary, a Democrat, now in a tight race with businessman and activist Tom Steyer, also a Democrat.

He's now the slight favorite to win the California gubernatorial race.

“I think everyone’s invoking my name,” Becerra said toward the end of the Tuesday night debate hosted by CNN where it was clear he stood in the cross fire. “It’s nice to hear my name.”

Former Biden officials are anonymously taking aim at one of their own, Politico reported Thursday morning.

"Six former Biden administration officials, all of whom were granted anonymity to speak candidly about a former colleague, acknowledged the subject of Becerra’s unlikely rise has come to dominate their group chats and conversations," Politico reported Thursday.

"'It gets the biggest laugh every time we send around a poll,' the first former official said, describing the perception across the administration that the former HHS secretary was ineffective on the COVID response, a migrant health crisis at the border and other matters," Politico continued. "'He ran one of the most consequential agencies in government at the height of the pandemic. But he took a backseat to Dr. Fauci and his team, didn’t visibly lead on implementation and had to go through layers to get to POTUS even as a Cabinet member.'"

Not surprisingly, conservative commentator Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor of California, piled on as well.  He told Newsmax on Thursday that Becerra comes with plenty of baggage.

"You got the Democrat machine getting behind Becerra, almost as if he's the answer to their prayers," he said.

"He's exactly what they love: a career politician. He's done nothing else for 36 years," Hilton continued.

"He will be the puppet of the unions and the activists. That's why they like him."

A SurveyUSA poll shows Hilton leading the field with 20% support. Democrat Tom Steyer follows closely at 18%, then Chad Bianco with 12% and Xavier Becerra at 10%.

Another survey, conducted by Evitarus for the California Democratic Party, paints an even picture. In that poll, Hilton and Becerra are tied at 18%, putting both candidates at the front of the race.

Hilton is still a long shot at 12/1 odds at BetOnline however.

Here are the latest numbers following Tuesday night's debate courtesy of BetOnline:
