Eric Swalwell

"We’re in really crazy territory" were the headlines blaring Saturday morning as bombshell reports had the frontrunner to win the California gubernatorial race, Eric Swalwell, accused of sexual assault.

The San Francisco Chronicle detailed claims from a woman who worked in Swalwell's office from 2019 to 2021, describing two assaults: one in 2019 after drinks where she blacked out, and another in 2024 following a gala.

CNN reported four women, including the individual detailed in the Chronicle, alleging misconduct from unsolicited images to assaults when intoxicated.

Swalwell, a sitting Democratic congressman, denied all claims as false and politically timed, but top Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi, and Adam Schiff called for his campaign to end and an investigation, with unions and co-chairs pulling support ahead of the June 2 primary. No formal probe or court ruling has occurred yet.

By Saturday morning, Swalwell's odds at BetOnline had plummeted from -300 on Monday all the way down to 18/1. This is uncharted territory.

By late Saturday morning, prediction markets were giving Swalwell an 88% chance of dropping out of the race.

Katie Porter 5/1
