Iran warned France and the UK Sunday of an 'immediate response' to any Hormuz deployment as the tensions escalate in the Middle East.
This threat comes after the UK defence ministry announced to send a destroyer as "part of prudent planning".
“The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow,” a ministry spokesperson told AFP.
"We remind them that both in times of war and in times of peace, only the Islamic Republic of Iran can establish security in this strait and it will not allow any country to interfere in such matters,” Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi posted on X.
Britain and France are leading efforts to create an international coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz. But traders aren't buying any of it. As of Sunday afternoon, traders at Polymarket were giving the UK just a 22% chance of such a deployment while France came in at 12%. Italy followed at 4%.
French President Emmanuel Macron clarified on Sunday that France had “never envisaged” a naval deployment in the Strait of Hormuz, but rather a security mission that would be “coordinated with Iran”.
