Justice Samuel Alito

BetOnline is offering odds on how many US Supreme Court justices will retire or be replaced before the next presidential race in 2028 with even odds for two (presumably Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas).

BetOnline will pay out $125 for every $100 bet if just one Supreme Court justice exits before the November 2028 general election.

They were also offering odds on who that next Supreme Court justice will be.  Andrew Oldham comes in at slightly greater than 2/1 odds, Aileen Cannon 4/1, Amul Thapar 7/1, James Ho 8/1 and Emil Bove at 8/1 odds.

Traders on Kalshi believe that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito will not announce his retirement by September 30 of this year despite much talk that such a move could reignite interest among Republicans to vote for their party representatives in the upcoming midterm elections.

Only a quarter of traders at Kalshi believe he will announce his retirement by the end of September while 43% believe he will do so by January 2017.

Alito, who just turned 76, fell ill at an event in Philadelphia last month and was treated for dehydration before returning home to suburban Washington,

Alito’s illness did not require an overnight hospital stay and he was back on the bench the following Monday, spokeswoman Patricia McCabe said in a statement.

Reports began surfacing that Senate Republicans, fearing their three-seat majority could be in danger in this year’s midterm election, would welcome the retirement of conservative Justice Samuel Alito as an “October surprise”.

“If we did have a Supreme Court vacancy obviously that would be a galvanizing issue for Republicans,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who is up for reelection in a battleground state.
