Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Still Favored to Stay Put as Council Strips Him

More bad news for embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford as he learned early Friday morning that the city council voted to strip him of some powers.  Gambling911.com has made Ford a -110 favorite to remain Mayor until the next election period approximately one year from now.

Mayor Ford has admitted to smoking crack cocaine.  He has also been accused of verbally and physically abusing aids.

There is no mechanism to get rid of Ford.  The only way for him to be removed is to be convicted AND incarcerated, not one or the other.  He can appeal such a conviction, with that process likely to last until the next election period.  Ford has insisted he will not step down as Mayor.

The council stripped Ford of his ability to appoint and dismiss his senior staff in an initial move aimed at usurping power from the controversial politician.

"Obviously, I can't support this," Ford told council members. "I perfectly understand where they're coming from."

"Council delegated those powers and council has the ability to take those powers away," City Solicitor Anna Kinastowski said at one point in the meeting.

Live betting for real money was made available Thursday at Bodog.ca.

The biggest payout of the three options has Ford “Resigning as mayor” by year's end with 9-4 odds, followed by “Take temporary leave” at 3-2. The safest betting option is “Neither, will remain mayor” with 1-1 odds.

“The resign option is, we felt, the most unlikely thing,” said Adam Burns, sports book manager for Bodog.ca in an interview with the Toronto Sun.  “We have lower limits on this — about $100 — and it’s just kind of fun. We felt like this was a good time to do it because (Ford) says he doesn’t want to resign and people in Toronto want him to take a leave. The story’s taken a turn and some sort of decision has to be made.”

Bodog.ca reported several bets made on the Toronto Mayor's fate within the first hour of offering the betting options.

Ford is viewed by many as a train wreck.  On Thursday he stood before the media to proclaim he had never stated to a female staffer that he wanted to “eat her pussy”.

“I would never do that. I'm happily married. I've got more than enough to eat at home,” he announced to red-faced journalists before making an abrupt exit.

The Toronto City Council voted 37-5 on Wednesday to ask Ford to take a leave of absence, and most members turned their backs on him when he addressed their Thursday meeting.

His brother, Doug Ford, a city council member, is urging him to take a leave of absence as well.

Mayor Ford and his brother are set to host their own TV talk show on Sun News Network, starting Monday night at 8 p.m.  A weekly radio show hosted by the brothers was recently cancelled.
