Thomas Massie now pays $140 for every $100 bet should he win
U.S. President Donald Trump's endorsed candidate Ed Gallrein is now the -185 favorite
Kentucky Republican incumbent congressman Thomas Massie is in trouble.
BetOnline has released its latest odds for the commonwealth's 04 Republican Primary and Massie is now listed as the +145 underdog paying $145 for every $100 bet should he win.
It's a shocking turn of events for a congressman who was widely seen as being safe coming into these primaries despite being at odds with U.S. President Donald Trump. Ed Gallrein is the candidate Trump has backed for this race. It’s one of the most competitive, costly and consequential races this cycle.
A poll released last week showed that Massie has slipped more than five points behind his GOP challenger, a former Navy SEAL and businessman.
Quantus Insights surveyed some 900 likely Republican voters in the Bluegrass State on May 11-12 and found that 48.2 percent support Gallrein over Massie with 43.1 percent support.
Massie had led in most other polls up to that point and Nate Silver grades Quantus Insights with a B/C, but BetOnline has proven especially accurate over the years with its political odds and the underdog status for Massie could spell trouble. BetOnline anticipates this could be one of the most wagered on primaries so far this year.
Massie has a contentious relationship with Trump, who has had prior success at getting incumbent Republicans who oppose his agenda unseated.
On Saturday, Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La. — one of the three remaining Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump of his impeachment following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol — lost to a Trump-backed candidate. Last month, five Indiana state senators lost re-election after the president endorsed against them because they opposed his redistricting push.
“I’m the main event,” Massie told MS NOW at the Capitol last week. “I’m not the last stop or the closing act. I’m the main event.”
