Just days after declaring he would fight his bowel cancer, legendary British poker pro David “Devilfish” Ulliott passed away Monday at the age of 61.

His son David confirmed the news on twitter on Monday, writing: “Unfortunately Dad, Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott lost his battle with cancer today and died peacefully surrounded by hos loved ones. xxx’.

Snooker legend Jimmy White added: “Rip Devilfish. Greatest character in poker and a good friend.”

Poker legend Doyle Brunson, who in recent days had waged a campaign to get Ulliott inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame wrote on Twitter:

“I was expecting Devilfish to pass, but not as quickly. He sent me 3 Direct Messages on twitter just days ago.#RIPpokerhalloffame?”

Ulliott shot to fame on the cult Channel Four series Late Night Poker in 1999.  He won more than £4million in a career that included a World Series of Poker bracelet in 1997.

He is survived by his wife Anpakitta, who he married in 2011 and eight children.
