Joran van der Sloot has officially been charged with the murder of a female Peruvian college student Stefany Flores on Thursday.  The young woman’s family feared that, had formal charges not been filed by year’s end, van der Sloot could have been set free.  He is currently awaiting trial in the notorious Castro Castro Prison in Lima.

Peruvian law demands that suspects must be charged within 18 months of their arrest or be set free.

Video surveillance showed Van der Sloot entering his hostel room with Ms. Flores the night of the murder.  He left early the next morning, alone and with his bags, then fled to neighboring Chile.  Prosecutors contend that van der Sloot beat Flores to death in a fit of rage.  He initially confessed to the murder than recanted.

Van der Sloot was attending the Latin American Poker Tour at the time, though he was not slated to play.  The poker community quickly discovered the young Dutchman had played online poker under a series of handles including AngryShark68.

Van der Sloot was the primary suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway on the island of Aruba nearly five years previous to the day of Flores’ murder.
