Top Trending: Gary Watts Lawsuit Claims Private Poker Games Not Illegal in South Carolina
A South Carolina poker player is set to challenge the concept that private games are against the law in the Palmetto State. Scroll down for all the latest gambling headlines from across the globe and top trending articles at Gambling911.com.
Gary Watts Says SLED, the Irmo, police and State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) overstepped their boundaries and broke the law when they arrested him and ten other friends playing poker in a rented office suite last year.
SLED went as far as to insert an informant into the game who wore a wire that recorded the players with “hidden recording equipment,” according to court documents — irrefutable evidence of poker playing.
“Playing poker ... with your friends in a rented office suite is not against the law,” says Watts’ recently flied lawsuit.
From The Herald:
Watts, who wants a jury trial, is accusing Irmo and SLED of false arrest, malicious prosecution and trespassing. Illegal gambling is a misdemeanor, but Watts has not yet been to trial on the charge. The heart of Watts’ lawsuit is its contention that the state law against playing poker specifically names the places where poker is illegal: taverns, inns, liquor stores, barns, kitchens, stables, outhouses, streets, highways, open woods and race tracks.
Watts’ lawsuit contained a rare bit of sarcasm for a legal document. It called the law officers in full tactical gear with assault rifles who smashed in the glass door to his rented office suite “a crack team of gumshoes” who “charged in like SEAL Team 6” and arrested a harmless “group of friends who routinely gather in an office suite to play poker, have dinner, and share fellowship.”

- Malik Beasley Probe Into Alleged Gambling Activity Not Over Yet - Just two weeks after federal investigators no longer considered NBA free agent Malik Beasley a target in their gambling probe, we are learning Wednesday that the NBA is conducting its own probe into the 28-year-old free agent. The investigation reportedly stems from allegations of improper gambling on NBA games and prop bets from the 2023-24 season when Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks. At least one U.S. sportsbook detected unusual betting interest on Beasley's statistics beginning around January 2024, according to reports. (read more from Gambling911.com here)
- NCAA Permanently Bans Three Fresno State and San Jose State Basketball Players as Part of Gambling Investigation - Three basketball players who spent time with either Fresno State or San Jose State were permanently banned by the NCAA on Wednesday as part of a gambling investigation, the organization announced. Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez and Jalen Weaver were deemed permanently ineligible by the NCAA. All three players were released from their teams and no longer enrolled at their schools following the investigation. In its ruling, the NCAA determined "the student-athletes bet on their own games, one another's games and/or provided information that enabled others to do so during the 2024-25 regular season." The NCAA found evidence that two of those players manipulated their own performances to ensure certain bets were won.

- Officials Put a Stop to Phoenix Dream Home Sweepstakes - Officials Put a Stop to Phoenix Dream Home Sweepstakes - State gaming officials are putting an end to an online Phoenix home raffle, saying it’s an illegal gambling scheme. The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced on Tuesday that it has issued a cease-and-desist order to a UK-based company called Raffall and a Valley man who are running the sweepstakes. John Smith said he is raffling off a $1.3 million mountainside home in north Phoenix with tickets starting at $10. If the minimum number of ticket sales is reached, the home would be awarded. If not, the winner gets 50% of the cash from the ticket sales. However, raffles can only be put on by charitable, tax-exempt organizations and personal profit is banned, officials said. The way this home sweepstakes is set up, Smith and Raffall look to profit from the other half of the ticket sales, so it’s an illegal gambling operation, the ADG said.

But what stood out more is it confirmed Fanatics bent over backwards to drive handle... their $565.8M was more than FanDuel and within spitting distance to Draftkings... flipside is they held only 2.8%, presumably because they just kept giving much of it back to the whale(s)...(source: Alfonso Straffon)

- Cruise Ship Passenger in Puerto Rico Jumps Overboard Allegedly to Avoid $16,000 Gambling Debt - A man who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship near the Port of San Juan over the weekend did so allegedly to avoid having to pay a $16,000 gambling debt to the cruise line. He has been charged with a federal crime, authorities said. Jey Gonzalez-Diaz embarked on the Rhapsody of the Seas at the Port of San Juan on Aug. 31, according to a criminal complaint filed Sunday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. The cruise ship returned from Barbados on Sunday — when Gonzalez-Diaz jumped into the water as the ship disembarked around 9:15 a.m. local time, during U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection, the criminal complaint said. Gonzalez-Diaz was then brought to shore by someone passing by on a jet ski, investigators said. The moment was captured on surveillance video. Diaz was later found carrying $14,600 in cash, two phones and five IDs.
