California will hold a hearing Wednesday (April 27, 2016) at 4:30 pm EST on the viability of online poker in the state and to review draft legislation AB 2863.  The sector has gained the support of California’s powerful horse racing coalition.

The only online wagering permitted in the Golden State is horse racing.  Because the racetracks will not be granted the right to offer Internet poker, they will be compensated an annual $60 million.

Online poker operators would be able to partner with approved technology firms to run the games.

Backers of Internet poker have been trying for years to have the game legalized on the Web in a state that ranks as the world’s 8th largest economy.  Until now, similar attempts were met with infighting among the state’s Tribal casino operators.
