San Jose, Costa Rica – It's not every day that a U.S. online poker site sends out a warning about one of its tournaments, but the very nature of The Sunday Special at Americas Cardroom calls for drastic measures. Americas Cardroom today announced that the $115,000 Sunday Special will not see its guarantee increase by $5k for the first time since launching at the beginning of this year.

Without increased player enthusiasm, The Sunday Special could find itself capped at $110,000.

"We've spent the last few months watching The Sunday Special skyrocket week after week after week," stated Americas Cardroom spokesperson Michael Harris. "While we're excited to have the biggest weekly Sunday poker tournament in the United States, we still want to see how high it can climb and we're urging players to win their spot through qualifiers running Saturday and Sunday."

Launched at the start of 2015, the Sunday Special kicked off with a prize pool of $25,000. The weekly prize pool increases by $5,000 every week, as long as the guarantee is met. Last week, the tournament had ballooned to $115,000.

However, this upcoming week, the prize pool won't see a $5k increase. That's because when the Sunday Special features an overlay, the prize pool is frozen the following week. Last Sunday, the tournament saw an overlay for the first time in its history.

If the prize pool fails to reach its guarantee this Sunday at 4:00pm ET, the following week's prize pool will drop to $110,000 and that will be the permanent prize pool for the Sunday Special moving forward.

$150,000 Freebuy Super Series

Harris notes that while there is a chance the prize pool might not realize its guarantee again, the Americas Cardroom community is hopeful, especially given the fact that the Freebuy Super Series is in full swing. The Freebuy series is a free online poker tournament series running now through May 17th. Every tournament is free to enter and players who wish to re-buy or add on can do so with real money or points.

"The interest in the Freebuy Super Series is enormous, with thousands of entries seen over the course of the weekend," added Harris. "With the potential for players to win a piece of $150,000 for free, we anticipate a lot of players using their winnings to enter The Sunday Special this week, and that could help propel the tournament guarantee higher once again."
