eSports and the Olympics May Not be Perfect Together
  • No medals for eSports in next Olympics

  • Violence in games cited as rationale for exclusion

  • Broadcasting rights remain murky

The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that esports will not be a medal event despite its popularity.

The IOC said that eSports lacks an official international governing group.

Additionally eSports suffers from licensing problems and violence in games.

Some critics say most popular games are too bloody though there is no scientific link between violent behavior and video games.

Shooting games contradict Olympic values. As a result, the IOC can’t accept them to be part of the Olympic Games. To defend esports, supporters say that the Olympics hold medal events involving swordplay, shooting, archery, and even combat sports.  Non-violent games could find a place in future Olympics.

Because video games utilize publishers, broadcasters might need to buy broadcasting rights to air games.

Advocates of esports said that video game events have a larger spectator following compared to the Olympic games. In recent years, there’s a decline in viewership of Olympic events, especially sports that are not popular among the younger audience.

There are even online betting sites that specialize in eSports or otherwise feature special sections on their websites.
