Google is reportedly going to launch an online gaming site, likely to be called “Google Games” according to a report at Technorati.

Assuming this to be the case, and it probably is, Google Games will be in an excellent position to take advantage of new online poker legislation in the States (and that is assuming such legislation does pass by year’s end).

Many online gambling industry experts have speculated that Google would be among the biggest threats, along with Facebook, against current online poker, casinos and sports betting firms, all of which operate outside the United States (with the notable exception of some licensed Internet horse betting groups).

“Countless industry operators express less worry about brick and mortar businesses like Harrah’s presenting much competition when compared to the likes of Internet savvy operations as Facebook and Google,” says Payton O’Brien, Senior Editor of the Gambling911.com website.

Google has just signed a check for a cool $100 million payable to Zynga, the folks behind Facebook’s uber popular free Texas Hold’em game platform.  There are more than 30 million Facebook users who play on Zynga Poker.

Technorati suspects that Google is looking to go head-to-head with Facebook in the social media sector.
