Betting on the 2010 PGA Championship has been quite astonishing according to Gambling911.com, which has monitored traffic over the past few days. Solid action was anticipated to come in on Mickelson as the favorite.
The 40-year-old American golfer has won four major championships and a total of 38 events on the PGA Tour. He has reached a career high world ranking of 2nd in multiple years. He is nicknamed "Lefty" for his left-handed swing, even though he is otherwise right-handed. According to estimates by Fortune Magazine, Mickelson's income for 2007 was over $51 million, with $47 million coming from endorsements.
Mickelson has a chance to overtake Tiger Woods as the world’s number one golfer with a win at this year’s PGA Championship, but he too failed miserably on Sunday at the Bridgestone Invitational.
"It was a rough day," Mickelson said after an ugly 78 in Sunday's final round. "I felt pretty good today. I felt good on the range, I hit some good shots. I felt like I was sharp and ready to go attack the golf course and make some birdies. And it just didn't happen."
Mickelson said he was frustrated that he hasn't taken over No. 1 even though Woods has been stuck in neutral (or worse) all year.
"If I keep finishing ahead of him every week eventually it'll happen, but the problem is there's guys behind me that will pass me because I'm not playing well enough right now," Mickelson said. "I've got some work to do to get my own game sharp."
