RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Stake.com, one of the largest global online gambling brands, gets to live another day in Brazil as that company was granted a partial injunction in the wake of an online gambling industry ban by President Lula.
The announcement by Lula late last month shocked the sector. Brazil is Latin America’s largest economy and biggest online gambling market.
Opinion polls have shown Lula locked in a tight race with right-wing Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro, eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, ahead of the Oct. 4 first-round vote.
Despite the victory, Stake will only be able to take bets in Brazil until October 25.
With the court decision, signed by Federal Judge Cristiane Farias Rodrigues dos Santos of the 9th Federal Civil Court of São Paulo., authorities must refrain from considering Stake’s authorisation terminated. Therefore, the blocking of the company’s platform is suspended.
According to the judge, “if the authorisation were legally nonexistent from the publication of the provisional measure, there would be no reason for the rule to establish a specific later date for its termination”.
According to Cristiane Farias, the administration cannot “fully anticipate the termination effects to a date prior to the time frame foreseen in the measure itself”.
