SDSU Mumps Spread Causes Game Spread to Move From 3.5 to 8 Texas State: But Will the Game Be Played?

SAN DIEGO - (Gambling911.com) - A mumps outbreak among the San Diego State football team has gamblers monitoring closely if the game will still be played Saturday night and, if not, what happens to their bet.

If a college football game is postponed before it starts, your bet is usually marked as "no action" and your stake is refunded, but it depends entirely on the specific sportsbook's house rules (BetOnline.ag's house rules appear at bottom of home page under Terms and Conditions).

As of Friday morning, San Diego State still intends to play Saturday night's game against Texas State. I found no announcement that the game has been postponed or canceled. The matchup remains officially scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT) at Snapdragon Stadium.

The mumps outbreak is nevertheless having a major impact on SDSU's roster. The outbreak has grown to 14 confirmed cases and one probable case. SDSU's initial availability report listed a remarkable 32 players, including nine out, eight doubtful, four questionable and 11 probable.

Senior running back Lucky Sutton, a 1,000-yard rusher last year, is among those who won't be playing after he reaggravated a high ankle sprain in an ugly 41-16 loss at Toledo on Saturday and had to be helped off the field.

The report also lists fellow running back Javion “Chop” Kinnard as doubtful. He suffered an apparent knee injury in the Toledo game and also had to be helped off the field.

The tight ends room appears to be the hardest hit, as all seven players on the roster are listed as questionable, doubtful or out.

The outbreak and known injury report has also impacted the line on this game, which has moved from Texas State -3.5 to -8.

The Aztecs are just 1-3 coming into Saturday night's game while the Bobcats maintain a 2-2 record.

With the San Diego State mumps outbreak occurring after a game in Toledo, the Toledo Rockets vs. Ball State Cardinals game status bears watching on Saturday as well.  That one was scheduled to begin at 2 pm EDT.

Most people who get mumps recover completely within about two weeks, particularly if they've been vaccinated. The classic symptom is painful swelling of the salivary glands around the cheeks and jaw, often accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite.

Mumps in adults tend to be more serious with possible complications that include orchitis (painful inflammation of the testicles), meningitis, pancreatitis, hearing loss and, very rarely, encephalitis (brain inflammation). CDC data indicate orchitis occurs in about 6% of vaccinated post-pubertal males who develop mumps, compared with roughly 30% of unvaccinated males in that group.

Death from mumps is considered extremely rare today.
