Hurricane Ike Out of the Preakness Stakes

Hurricane Ike looked to be a solid contender at this Saturday's Preakness Stakes, but unfortunately he was pulled on Thursday due to injury.

"I had three calls before I woke up," trainer Ike Thrash said. "I figured it was not good news. They said he was favoring his hind leg.

"After he worked out the other day, he was limping around the barn a little this morning," Thrash said Wednesday. "He won't be able to run three or four days from now.

"It's like his upper hind end, like a pulled muscle. It's not major, but it's enough not to run."

Just prior to the Kentucky Derby, heavily favored Eskendereya was pulled from the race and forced into retirement after his injury was deemed "too serious.

Thrasher does not believe Hurricane Ike will meet that same fate.

"There are three, four, five more major races for 3-year-olds," Thrash said. "He could run in the Super Derby (Sept. 25 at Shreveport, La.), the Haskell (Aug. 1 at Oceanport, N.J.) or the Travers (Aug. 28 at Saratoga, N.Y.).

"Missing one race is not a big deal, but with the Preakness, you don't get too many chances. It always happens, but it doesn't always happen at the Preakness."
