Chief Wallabee

Chief Wallabee was listed with 9-1 odds to win this year's Kentucky Derby.  The horse was seeing the largest bet count at BetOnline heading into Saturday morning.

Chief Wallabee has limited experience but did finish a respectable 2nd in the Fountain of Youth and 3rd in the Florida Derby, his most recent two starts out of three starts.

Gamblers may be paying special attention to his Kentucky Derby workouts.

From Thoroughbred Daily News

Chief Wallabee worked in fractions of :24.80, :36.60 and :48.20 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12 and seven-eighths in 1:26.60, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols.

“I thought it was very good, he finished really well and galloped out strong,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “He's an inexperienced horse and we put the blinkers on to give him a little something to help him focus.”

Alvarado added, “It was a good work. He had a strong gallop out and did everything we wanted to.”

Chief Wallabee's final Kentucky Derby workout–a four-furlong breeze in :49.20 Apr. 26–could've easily topped this list as well.

Other Pros

  • Top trainer Bill Mott has had recent Kentucky Derby success.
  • Known for his ability to kick it up late.
  • Bred to handle longer distances (1¼ miles).
  • Peaking in April/May is exactly what you want for this race.
  • Jockey Junior Alvarado won the 2023 Kentucky Derby on board Mage.

Other Cons

  • Relies heavily on a fast early pace.
  • Deep closers often get stuck behind tiring horses.
