Thursday April 30, 2026 (7:28 am EDT)
James "Jimmy the Greek" Gerodemos and 21 others were charged with gambling-related crimes and violent extortion in a federal grand jury indictment in northwest Indiana. Gerodemos is accused of running an illegal sports betting business across several states. Many of the defendants appeared in Indiana federal court on Wednesday without fanfare. Some of the defendants had nicknames listed by federal agents, a list that included "Rami Straight Flush, Caesars Andrew, Donny Brasco and Chuckie Hoffa." Private homes, businesses, restaurants and financial institutions are all listed in the indictment as targets of forfeiture efforts by prosecutors.

Gambling Giant William Hill Blames UK Tax Rises as They Close Hundreds of Stores
Thursday April 30, 2026 (7:28 am EDT)
Evoke, the owner of William Hill and 888, has confirmed the closure of approximately 270 betting shops across the UK. Evoke reported pre-tax losses more than doubled to £549.1 million in 2025. This was a response to offset expected increase in duty costs of up to £135 million a year from 2027 after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced tax hikes for online gambling firms in the 2025 autumn budget.. The shop closures are expected to result in hundreds of job losses. Evoke last week said it was in talks over a potential takeover by Greek lottery and gaming firm Bally’s Intralot in a deal valuing the UK betting group at £225.3 million.
