Billionaire John Morgan is a co-founder of Morgan & Morgan, which primarily handles plaintiff-side cases, meaning they represent people suing for damages. The firm is based out of Orlando, Florida.
Morgan is currently a registered Independent who left the Democratic Party in 2017. He is planning to launch a new third party in Florida to oppose the two-party system.
Outside of maybe Mickey Mouse and the Seminoles, Morgan & Morgan is one of the most recognized names in the state of Florida.
John Morgan is now promising anyone $100,000 who can name his new political party. In doing so, Morgan confirmed he would not be running for governor of the state (he might actually have won).
On the local level at least, the odds are good Morgan can have success starting his own party.
“For about the last year and a half, a lot of people have been asking me to run for governor of the state of Florida. It’s really quite an honor,” he said. “So today, I’m going to answer that question and tell you my plans.”
According to Morgan, his success with two constitutional campaigns — one for marijuana use and the other for the minimum wage — was already “more impactful than anything any governor has ever done.”
“So I won’t be running for governor,” he continued. “But I do believe this: that most of us agree on most things. I’ve found that with my amendments, if you take the D down and the R down, we agree on most things together.”
Early last year, Morgan announced that he was starting up a new political party in Florida, claiming it would be “for those of us stuck in the middle.”
About 45% of U.S. adults identify as independents (a record high in recent polling).
Most local races here in the state of Florida, with a few exceptions, are nonpartisan. This means no "R" or "D" next to city council, mayor, school board and judicial races.
