More Arrests in Florida Over Gambling Machines, Wisconsin's Online Sports Betting Bill Signed or Not

Tuesday March 31, 2026 (2:55 pm EDT)

  • (Florida) - Two Arrested in Sarasota Gambling Raid - 66 slot machines were seized as part of the investigation.  The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Gaming Control Commission shut down an illegal gambling operation, seizing 66 slot machines and cash after a months-long investigation, according to SCSO.  Two suspects, Mohamed Belyaqout, 52, and Mabielka Cumbrera, 45, were arrested on consecutive days and charged with operating a gambling house and possessing slot machines.  Cease and desist letters have previously been sent to the business.

  • (Florida) - Florida's Illegal Gambling Crackdown Fails Amid Veteran Concerns - Efforts to pass legislation that would tighten the Sunshine State's gambling laws failed to pass last week. Florida’s legislature came close. Then time ran out. The 2026 session ended on March 13 without a single illegal gambling bill crossing the finish line.  The state’s enforcement framework remains unchanged. Illegal gambling arcades continue to operate in legal gray areas. Sweepstakes platforms face no new restrictions.

  • (Wisconsin) - Gov Evers "Not Particularly Excited" to Sign Online Sports Betting Bill - In Wisconsin, once a bill is formally delivered to the governor, they generally have  6 days (excluding Sundays) to sign or veto it.   The governor’s signing clock starts when the bill is delivered—not when session ends.  That deadline has seemingly come and gone, though Wisconsin news outlets are reporting there is still time.  Governor Tony Evers says he's not particularly excited about the bill. "We're still working with people it, for me, it's always been making sure that we have some kind of equity among tribal nations and on this wash, it looked like that type of equity that we're looking for wasn't necessarily there," Evers said.  The 2026 session of the Wisconsin Legislature ended March 19, 2026.  The online sports betting bill (AB 601) passed the Senate on March 17, 2026 and would, in theory at least, have been sent to his desk that day or the day after.  There could have been a delay as to when the clerk actually delivered the bill to Ever's desk.  Today is the 31st though.

Brent Crude Oil Price on Friday at 5pm EDT?

Monday March 30 2026 (9:30 pm ET)

A blaze on board a Kuwaiti oil tanker anchored just off Dubai's main port has been brought under control after fire crews battled flames overnight.

The Salmi, which was 'fully-laden' according to Kuwait Petroleum, was struck in an apparent Iranian drone strike.  The maximum capacity: about 1.2 million barrels of crude oil.  The loss could disrupt oil supply and pricing further.

Kalshi did not report a rise in trades on the price of Brent crude oil price on Friday at 5pm EDT.  47% of traders believe the price will be above $113 on Friday, but that percentage had been 58% just hours prior.

Maritime firefighters on Tuesday morning were assessing the damage. Dubai authorities said all 24 crew were safely accounted for.

The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation says the Iranian attack could lead to an oil spill.

“Relevant teams continue to assess the situation and take the necessary measures, and updates will be shared as they become available,” it said.

CFTC Chair Responds to NFL Concerns Over Prediction Markets

Monday March 30 2026 (9:10 pm ET)

David Purdum of ESPN reported on Monday that the NFL sent out letters to various prediction markets over the weekend requesting that they refrain from offering certain trades that can easily be manipulated beforehand.

These include such things as what announcers say during broadcasts, which celebrities attend games and the upcoming draft.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) new chairman Mike Selig responded via X.

"The @CFTC takes seriously its responsibility to reject prediction market contracts that are readily susceptible to manipulation and we’re working with the professional sports leagues to ensure we get this right.

"When a league raises manipulation concerns about a contract proposed to be listed on a prediction market, the agency considers the league’s concerns and may prohibit the contract from being listed."

81% of Those Surveyed Believe That Sports Event Contracts Constitute Gambling

Monday March 30 2026 (11:50 am ET)

A new poll by Morning Consult suggests that Americans feel strongly that sports event contracts need to be better regulated to prevent gambling harm and benefit state taxing authorities.

Key findings, according to Morning Consult:

81% of those polled believe that sports event contracts constitute gambling.

81% think that prediction markets should be regulated and taxed at the state level.

77% are concerned that prediction markets that allow 18-year-olds to play “could” increase problem gambling in that demographic.

73% believe that “describing sports bets as ’event contracts,’ ’swaps’ or ’futures’” complicates understanding the financial risk involved, particularly for younger bettors.

70% equate the term “investing” with “gambling,” in terms of buying sports event contracts.

70% were “somewhat” or “very” concerned about insider trading on prediction markets.

56% believed, however, that wagering at a sportsbook and a prediction market carried “about the same” risk.

Said coalition Executive Director Mick Mulvaney: “This polling confirms that unabated sports gambling on prediction markets is a growing concern across America. Prediction markets are trying to disguise their sports betting products as a financial investment, misleading Americans and dodging consumer safeguards like age requirements.”

Morning Consult polled 15,029 U.S. adults from March 17-22 for the report, which has a stated margin of error of +/- 1%.
