Homicide detectives with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide at the Rio Hotel & Casino o the Las Vegas Strip that occurred some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Police confirm that a woman and her preteen daughter were found dead in the hotel.

Authorities say a 38-year-old mother, Tawnia McGeehan, and her 11-year-old daughter, Addi Smith, were found deceased Sunday in a room. Family members and friends initially reported the pair missing and last seen at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino around 8 p.m. Saturday.

LVMPD Homicide Lt. Robert Price confirmed police were initially alerted when they were asked to conduct a welfare check shortly before 11 am.

Price says police knocked on the hotel room door several times and called the room without any answer. Hotel security was advised, and officers left the hotel, Price said.

The mother and daughter had traveled from Utah for a cheer competition. When they failed to appear, their team, Utah Xtreme Cheer, raised concern on social media and asked for help locating them.

After the heartbreaking discovery, the team shared a photo of Addi, expressing their devastation and describing her as deeply loved. Police believe the incident occurred late Saturday.

This is a developing story.
