Sportsbetting.com offered the Carolina Panthers up at 25/1 odds of winning the 2011 NFC Championship even after Jimmy Clausen was picked by the team in what was quite a surprise considering the Panthers were hardly even mentioned in the Clausen equation.

The Panthers now become a potentially lethal team, having made it to the .500 mark last year even with a pretty bad quarterback at the helm.

After sitting out the first night of the draft with no first-round pick, the Panthers addressed one of their biggest needs and perhaps presented competition to newly minted starter Matt Moore.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Clausen was rated as a first-round pick by many analysts but wasn't selected Thursday. Carolina took him ahead of his college teammate Golden Tate and other receiver prospects.

Clausen won't have all the answers though. In 2008, the Panthers had the most dominant offensive line in the industry but lost a number of their players coming into the 2009 season, and it showed.

They'll need a few more good selections to be a real threat in the NFC.
