BetOnline has conducted a not-so-scientific study that shows which college team is perceived as the most "overrated". And the winner (or loser, depending on how you look at it)? That would be the Oklahoma Sooners. They open the season promising a payout of $5000 for every $100 bet (dream on). But they are also in the middle of a gambling scandal involving their star quarterback, John Mateer.
He has denied ever being involved with gambling after screenshots of past references to "sports gambling" on his Venmo account surfaced online Monday. He claimed on Tuesday it was harmless "inside jokes" with his friends.
Not everyone is buying his explanation, and this one could be ripe for an NCAA probe.
Mateer allegedly included "sports gambling" in memos for transactions on Nov. 20, 2022, while he was a freshman at Washington State.
The OU Athletic Department issued a statement of its own, saying that it takes gambling allegations seriously but was unaware of any investigation being conducted by the NCAA related to this matter.
So if Mateer, when he was a freshman at Washington State, was found to have bet on another college football game, he’d be looking at a half-season ban, writes Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman.

Most Overrated College Football Team BetOnline Study
The findings come from analyzing data via social media websites like X.
For example, "Oklahoma is overrated," "Texas is overrated," "Texas shouldn't be #1 #Overrated" "Miami is definitely overrated," "Florida is ranked too high," etc. Over 50,000 tweets were tracked.
As you can see from the graphic, college football fans think #18 ranked Oklahoma is the most overrated team in the top 25, followed by #10 ranked Miami, and #1 ranked Texas.
Oklahoma was 6-7 last year, which could have led to many fans not thinking they deserve to be ranked. Addtionally, many believe that #1 Texas hasn't proven enough to deserve the top spot, and that the sky high expectations for Arch Manning will be nearly impossible for him to meet.
