The oldest casino in Las Vegas is saying goodbye to live dealers and moving to fully electronic table games.

Can Robots Replace Live Casino Dealers in the Future? Exploring Technology and Human Interaction - Rapp Project

Derek Stevens, owner of the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the decision followed the success of electronic gaming tables at one of his other downtown properties.

"What we’re seeing is that more and more younger people want to play these [electronic games],” Stevens told the newspaper.

Many casinos have been adding electronic table games in recent years, citing lower labor costs and growing interest from younger gamblers who are more comfortable with digital play.

He said dealers from the Golden Gate will be allowed to transfer to his other casinos.

The original property was purchased in 1905 at Fremont and Main streets for $1,750. In 1906, room and board was $1 per day.

But could this only be the beginning, where the Vegas casino dealer goes the way of the dodo bird?

Vegas Dead This Summer

Long time sports handicapper Steve Fezzik posted earlier this month:

"Friday afternoon on the Las Vegas strip, never seen it so slow here when the weekend is starting."

This tweet accompanied a photo of a casino floor with not a human in sight.

Fodors supported what Fezzik witnessed with real time data:

Recent numbers show that tourist-dependent Las Vegas is feeling the squeeze after June saw 11.3% fewer visitors compared with last year. Canadians, traditionally some of its most loyal customers, have turned their backs. Inflation and rising costs are also driving away American visitors. However, there are some positive numbers. Casino gaming revenue in Clark County was up 3.5% in June, totaling nearly $1.16 billion.

Gloria Valdez has made a living as a hostess at a steakhouse at the D Casino in downtown Las Vegas for 15 years, surviving through the economic crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. But she says she’s never seen business this bad.

“The pandemic was something that was worldwide, and we had the hope that everything would get better,” she told Time. “We're not sure if and when this is gonna stop.”

The Las Vegas Convention Center Authority attributed the downturn to “economic uncertainty and weaker consumer confidence.”

Others say it's rising prices and politics.

“If you tell the whole world that they're not welcome, they're not going to come,” says Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union. “The lifeblood for Las Vegas is Southern California. What folks are telling our members is that the raids and crazy tariffs and this uncertainty, [are causing] people to pull back.”

Sooners QB Provides Statement Re: Gambling Controversy

Oklahoma starting quarterback, John Mateer, has denied ever being involved with gambling after screenshots of past references to "sports gambling" on his Venmo account surfaced online Monday. He claimed on Tuesday it was harmless "inside jokes" with his friends.

Mateer allegedly included "sports gambling" in memos for transactions on Nov. 20, 2022, while he was a freshman at Washington State.

Mateer issued a statement late Tuesday.

"The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer wrote in his statement. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends.

"I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling."

The OU Athletic Department issued a statement of its own, saying that it takes gambling allegations seriously but was unaware of any investigation being conducted by the NCAA related to this matter.

So if Mateer, when he was a freshman at Washington State, was found to have bet on another college football game, he’d be looking at a half-season ban, writes Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman.
