One of the first states to allow sports betting following the May 2018 US Supreme Court decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, Illinois hasn't always made things easy.

For starters, the state required individuals to register in person to open their mobile betting accounts for a designated period of time.  Residents were provided some reprieve with the Covid-19 pandemic before another period in which in-person registrations were required.

Illinois also prohibits betting on in-state schools.  The Fighting Illini have gotten pretty good in college football in recent years while state schools routinely make it into the NCAA men's college basketball tournament.

The Land of Lincoln does not permit college player prop bets either.

Now comes word customers will no longer be able to use their credit cards to make deposits with their favorite Illinois-regulated sportsbook.

The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has banned using credit cards to gamble on sports online.

The board has moved to ban credit card use to “further support responsible gaming.”

“Problem gamblers are particularly at risk,” said IGB administrator Marcus D. Fruchter. “Studies have shown an often-problematic willingness for compulsive gamblers to use credit cards to place bets.”

Credit cards were already prohibited in brick and mortar sportsbooks.
