One of the more intriguing storylines of the current NFL offseason involves the standout wide receiver Makea (Puka) Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams. A two-season veteran at the ripe old age of 23, Nacua has become a star.

Bursting on the scene with rookie records of 105 receptions and 1,486 yards (six touchdowns) in his Pro Bowl season of 2023. Nacua was slowed by injury this past season. He still hauled in 79 passes (990 yards) in 11 NFL games, despite missing significant time with a preseason (aggravated in regular season) injured knee.

All in all, that’s not bad, considering Nacua was originally a fifth-round selection (177th overall).

What has kept Nacua in the news, however (besides his exploits on the field), is his desire to leave pro football using the same time frame as former Rams’ All-Pro teammate Aaron Donald. “I know I want to retire at the age of 30.”

If you’re keeping track of the NFL schedule, that’s right around the 2031 season, so not exactly imminent, but certainly quite newsworthy.

Nucua, who played collegiately at both Washington and Brigham Young, wants to emulate Donald’s “going out on top” pro career. Winning a Super Bowl title (after the 2021 season), Donald ended his soon-to-be Hall-of-Fame decade in the league after 2023.

Donald also cited “burnout” and “a lack of passion,” neither of which has affected Nucua.

Puka Nucua’s retirement is a few seasons down the road, no concern among the SoFi Stadium faithful…at least now.

According to our good friends on the internet, Puka Nacua’s ethnicity is Samoan, Hawaiian, and Portuguese. Puka is said to mean “fat and chubby” in Samoan. While that may have described Nacua as a child, he’s 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, so no “Puka” now.

Nacua has excelled to the point that he’s on the 2025 MVP board, currently at 100-1 (+10000), according to NFL betting odds.

Conversation about Puka Nacua’s retirement has made the rounds this offseason since he himself broached the subject, saying he wants to exit the NFL at the age of 30, which is about seven seasons down the road.
