On August 1st, I sent out odds courtesy of BetOnline.ag that had Paul Skenes as a 1/100 favorite to win the National League Rookie of the Year award.

Odds that short typically put a bow on an award.

Not so fast. San Diego Padres rookie all-star outfielder, Jackson Merrill has done the unthinkable. He has surpassed the mustachioed Paul Skenes as the favorite to win the NL ROY.

Case in point: Merrill delivered a three-run double Monday as the Padres bested the Twins 6-3.

Last Wednesday, Merrill went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple,  leading the Padres to a lopsided 8-2 win over Skenes Pirates club.

There was a point the last few months where pretty much every sports handicapper would jump on board the Pirates when Skenes was starting.  This is a Pittsburgh team that went 0-10 at one point earlier this month.

Skenes is 1-1 with a 4:15 ERA in August with almost ½ walk per inning.

Meanwhile, in August, Merrill is hitting .315 with four home runs and 15 rbi’s with a slugging percentage of .704 and an OPS of 1.054. Truly sick numbers. Plus he has only struck out seven times this month and is a plus fielder.
