The dream of a gleaming casino complex in Virginia, outside the shadow of D.C.'s MGM National Harbor, has been placed on hold. A bill proposing a casino in Fairfax County, specifically Tysons Corner, was tabled by the Virginia Senate Subcommittee on Resources until 2025 [WUSA9].

This doesn't signal the end of casino discussions in the state, however. Senator Dave Marsden (D-Fairfax) introduced a separate bill in January 2024 that would pave the way for Fairfax County to consider a casino [NBC Washington]. This bill, if passed, would initiate a local approval process for a potential Tysons casino.

The delay of the initial proposal suggests some hurdles remain. Concerns from residents and local officials about traffic congestion, the impact on the community, and competition with existing businesses likely factored into the decision [WUSA9].

However, Senator Marsden's bill demonstrates continued interest in expanding casino gambling in Virginia. The potential economic benefits, including job creation and tax revenue, remain a significant draw for some lawmakers.

With the 2025 legislative session approaching, it's likely the debate over Virginia casinos will reignite. Whether Tysons Corner or another location emerges as the frontrunner, the question of how, and if, to expand gambling outside of D.C. is sure to be a hot topic in Virginia politics.
