Alabama Baseball Coach Fired Over Suspicious Bets
(May 4, 2023) - For anyone thinking that Alabama is going to be regulating online sports betting any time soon in light of this recent scandal, we got a bridge to sell you. In fact, this story doesn't bode well for any state that regulates sports betting and could result in further restrictive measures pertaining to college sports.
The University of Alabama fired its baseball coach Brad Bohannon Thursday after "suspicious betting" activity was found on last Friday's game between that school and LSU. Regulators in Ohio promptly ordered sportsbooks to stop taking bets on Alabama baseball moving forward.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission's investigation is centered on two bets on the Tigers to win from the same unidentified customer, multiple industry sources told ESPN. The Louisiana Gaming Commission claimed this week that those bets were placed somewhere in the Cincinnati area.
Athletic director Greg Byrne has "initiated the termination process" for Bohannon for "among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees."

NCAA Issues Statement Regarding Suspicious Betting Observed Related to Alabama Baseball Team
(May 3, 2023) - State regulators In Ohio, Louisiana and Alabama were all advised of "suspicious betting" activity observed in a Friday night college baseball game between Alabama and LSU that prompted regulators in Ohio to place a ban on Crimson Tide baseball bets and presumably the games they are playing in. The Crimson Tide (30-15, 9-12 SEC) takes on No. 5 Vanderbilt (32-11, 16-5 SEC) this weekend in Tuscaloosa.
Regulators from Louisiana confirmed that the suspicious wagers were placed in the Cincinnati area, hence Ohio's action. The Buckeye State began offering sports betting on January 1.
Now we are also learning that Alabama RHP Luke Holman was scratched from starting around an hour prior to the game start — a potential explanation for the large bets placed on the Tigers.
The NCAA issued a statement late Tuesday.
"The NCAA takes sports wagering very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and the integrity of competition," the organization said Tuesday. "We are aware of this issue and actively gathering additional information."
Here's What Happened When Louisiana Was Alerted to Suspicious Betting Activity With Alabama Baseball Team
(May 2, 2023) - There is no indication that the odds-on favorite to win this year's College World Series, the LSU Tigers, were involved in any wrongdoing after it was reported that the Ohio Gambling Commission will ban bets on the Alabama baseball team after spotting suspicious activity.
The chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board said his state also received the alert. Not only did the game involve LSU, those in Louisiana can legally bet on college baseball games.
Ronnie Johns said he and his board will be monitoring the situation closely. They are yet to announce any team betting bans.
Johns is the first to elaborate on what transpired Friday night to prompt the alert. The Ohio Gaming Commission did not provide any details.
"There were a couple of bets made in Cincinnati, Ohio," Johns said. "One was on a parlay which involved the LSU-Alabama game, and then there was another straight-up (money line) bet, I was told it was a large bet that involved LSU-Alabama."
Can't Bet Alabama Baseball Games From Ohio as Suspicious Activity Found
(May 2, 2023) - Alabama baseball game betting is now prohibited in the state of Ohio after regulators determined there to be suspicious activity.
The activity in question took place during Alabama's series-opening loss at LSU on Friday at Alex Box Stadium.
Las Vegas-based firm U.S. Integrity issued a report of suspicious activity on Friday but did not provide further details.
LSU is the odds-on favorite to win the College World Series and did win the game in question Friday 8-6.
