The Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have agreed to a 1-year $8.5 million deal in hopes that the former Browns starting quarterback can fill the shoes of the amazing now retired Tom Brady.

The payout odds on the Bucs have moved as a result of the news.  Good for the bettors, bad for the Bucs.

The Bucs saw their odds worsen after signing Mayfield. SportsBetting.ag moved Tampa Bay's Super Bowl chances from 75-1 to 95-1.  Ouch!

Mayfield wwent 1-5 as a starter last season in Carolina before being cut. He later joined the Los Angeles Rams and went 1-3 in four starts.

Mayfield’s best season was 2020 when he led the Browns to an 11-5 record and a playoff win over the rival Steelers. Whether his best playing days are behind him remain to be seen.

The Buccaneers needed a veteran quarterback with the ability to start to compete with 2021 second-round draft pick Kyle Trask.

General manager Jason Licht said at the NFL combine that the Buccaneers "have a lot of faith in Kyle." But going from third string to a starter and following in the footsteps of seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady would be a tall ask for any player, let alone one who saw his first NFL regular-season snaps ever in Week 18.

Tampa Bay will have a new offensive coordinator in Dave Canales, who was largely credited for helping revive Geno Smith's career in Seattle.
