Jimmy Garoppolo to Remain With 49ers This Season

Just last month, oddsmakers were offering trade odds on Jimmy Garoppolo.  It appears those odds are coming down following word Jimmy G will be staying with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Browns were favored, primarily a result of the uncertainty over Deshaun Watson's season.

A handful of other teams had short odds, including the Giants and Texans.

A source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Garoppolo and the 49ers have discussed the option of waiving the no-trade clause if something develops and the 49ers can get compensation.  In the end, Garoppolo wanted to remain a Niner.  San Francisco had the 7th shortest odds to win the Super Bowl this season.

In games Kyle Shanahan has coached where other quarterbacks started, the 49ers only went 8-28.   They went 35-16 with Garoppolo as a starter.

He'll likely be playing backup to Trey Lance this season and will have the option to explore unrestricted free agency in 2023.

As good as he might be, Jimmy G has been criticized for throwing too many interceptions.  He's also been plagued by injuries.

"I think Jimmy Garoppolo deserves a ton of credit because of the way he handled the situation," general manager John Lynch said after the season. "The way not only he went about competing, competition brings out the best in everyone, it certainly did with Jimmy, but the way he also welcomed Trey and helped him along the way, it was a really nice thing to see. And I think it speaks volume to who he is."
