FBI Agent Sentenced for Gambling Away Government Money at Bellagio

Money meant for an undercover sting operation was instead diverted towards Vegas casinos.  More specifically, an FBI agent was found to have used said funds he received from the government to support his gambling addiction.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro will determine if the former agent, Scott F. Carpenter, 40, can serve his sentence three-month in home confinement.

Carpenter admitted losing $13,500 in July 2017 playing high stakes blackjack at the Bellagio with the funds provided by the government. 

Carpenter’s lawyers provided testimonials about him, his FBI work and his U.S. Army military service in Iraq.

A federal prosecutor also told the court that Carpenter self-reported the misuse of funds and promised to pay them back.

Carpenter was only charged with a misdemeanor and continued to work for the FBI until after he pleaded guilty in February to conversion of government money.
