Chase Elliott's Win by Disqualification Leads to Controversy in Betting World

Chase Elliott won big for bettors in Sunday's NASCAR's M&M's Fan Appreciation 400 but he wasn't the first to cross the finish line, or the second for that matter.

Denny Hamlin crossed the finish line first at Pocono.  Later on, he and second-place finisher Kyle Busch had been disqualified after a post-race inspection.

Elliott finished third but was ultimately declared the winner.

The actual winner for gamblers depended on the sportsbook and its rules.  BetOnline paid out Elliott bettors.

BetMGM had its own "minimum length of play" rule.  That meant Hamlin was the winner.

"All wagers will be settled according to the unofficial results reported immediately after the conclusion of the race by the governing organization. Any changes to the finishing order that occurs based on appeals, penalties or scoring malfunctions after the race has concluded, will not be recognized."

BetMGM confirmed that they would not be paying out Elliott wagers as of Monday morning.

Just shy of 10% of bets were on Elliott compared to nearly 18% on Hamlin.

So how did other sportsbooks grade this one:

bet365 reportedly paid out on Hamlin and then changed it to a loss.

Bovada graded their top 3 bets on Hamlin and Bush as winners despite the disqualifications.

Circa Sportsbook paid Elliot as the winner.
