Payout Odds Rich Strike to Win Preakness Stakes

BetOnline was quick to release odds on Rich Strike to win the Preakness Stakes following his shock upset at this year's Kentucky Derby.  At 100-1 odds, Rich Strike was the second biggest upset in that prestigious race's long history.

What Are The Payout Odds for Rich Strike to Win the Preakness Stakes?

Rich Strike opened at 5-1 odds to win the 2022 Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. The payout would be $500 for every $100 bet or $50 for every $10 bet.

Epicenter and Zandon, the 2nd and 3rd place finishers at the Kentucky Derby, were favored to win the Preakness over Rich Strike.

The chestnut colt beat 4-1 favorite Epicenter by three-quarters of a length after charging up the rail in the final seconds.

His post position 20 start had only produced a single winner in the history of the Derby, Big Brown in 2008.

Rich Strike's Kentucky Derby win came only after he replaced Etheral Road, who had been scratched from the race on Friday.

“I about fell down in the paddock when he hit the wire,” winning trainer Eric Reed said. “I about passed out.”

Rich Strike paid $163.60. Only Donerail in 1913 had a higher payout of $184.90.

“What a crazy Derby,” said trainer Kenny McPeek, whose horses finished eighth and ninth.

Rich Strike was an after thought having only been part of the Kentucky Derby field a little more than 24 hours prior to Saturday's post time.

“We found out about 30 seconds before the deadline on Friday,” owner Rick Dawson said. “It put us in the race and really we always felt if we just got in we’ve got a shot.”

BetOnline's Dave Mason revealed Saturday night that this year's Kentucky Derby was the biggest in his company's nearly 25 year history.

Mason also confirmed there were bets placed on Rich Strike, including one that yielded a $22,600 payout.
