There were a total of 11 double-digit dogs in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Men's College Basketball Tournament.

Of those eleven, nearly half did manage to cover the spread (5).

But here is where it really gets interesting.

The favorites that covered were ranked 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13.

Nothing really to see there as this is a fairly wide range.

It's when we get to the top ranked teams where things seem to have mostly gone awry.

Check this out.

Favorites ranked 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 all failed to cover.  That represents five of the top six ranked teams in the nation, each failing to cover their respective spreads.

Number 10-ranked FSU was a single-digit favorite of -8.5 that failed to cover while No. 12-ranked LSU had a line of -7 against Yale and also failed to cover with a five-point win.

None of the eleven double-digit dogs won outright, something to keep in mind when submitting your office pool or partaking in one of those March Madness Bracket Contests.

All teams ranked 1 through 17 won outright, with only one game too close for comfort (a single digit victory).

Teams ranked 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25 each failed to win outright.  Only two of the teams ranked within the No. 18 to 25 range managed to win.   In other words only two of the bottom 8 among the top 25 ranked won outright.
