Can I Now Join Illinois Sports Betting Apps Through My Phone?

Remote sports betting in the state of Illinois went live effective March 5, 2022.  While the state began licensing sportsbooks two years ago, customers had been required to join in-person via a local retail outlet such as a casino.

What It Means

For the operators and players alike this is great news.  No longer does one have to travel many miles (up to 3 hours in some cases) in order to register with one of the six in-state sports betting apps.

They include:

Barstool

BetRivers

Caesars

DraftKings

FanDuel

PointsBet

As a result of the apps now opening to remote registration Gambling911.com has upgraded the state of Illinois to a 7 rating out of 10.

The inability to wager on in-state schools and games that feature them as well as the limited number of apps and somewhat high tax has kept Illinois' rating down.

So What Happened?

When sports betting was authorized in Illinois in 2020 the law required a two-year in-person registration requirement.  That requirement was lifted temporarily through much of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
