He was a true friend that always there for me and rooted for me throughout my life … My thoughts and prayers to the Schmidt family. I will miss u my friend. Rest in Peace buddy.”

Bluff Magazine founder Eric Morris, another friend of Schmidt, confirmed the one-time PokerStars pro had died of a heart attack. Schmidt has long had heart problems including a prior heart attack in his 20's.

The Oregon-based player was nicknamed “Leatherass” due to the long hours he would play.

Schmidt was among the more controversial poker players for his outspoken commentary on everything from comparing poker's Black Friday indictments to 911 to his anti-Covid vax stance.  Schmidt had previously authored a book "Don't Listen to Phil Hellmuth", which was critical of the World Series of Poker record bracelet holder.
