Oscar De La Hoya Hospitalized With COVID-19: Sept 11 Fight Cancelled

Oscar De La Hoya was slated to return to the ring September 11 in a bout against MMA fighter Vitor Belfort.  This one will have to wait after De La Hoya revealed he is being hospitalized for Covid-19.  The Mexican boxer is fully vaccinated.

The 48-year-old was to take on Belfort in a pay-per-view event at Staples Center in Los Angeles. It would have been his first fight since being stopped by Manny Pacquiao in 2008.  De La Hoya was listed as the -190 favorite to beat Belfort.

The former boxing champion posted a video online Friday of himself in a hospital bed, saying he caught the virus despite being fully vaccinated.

“I am currently in the hospital getting treatment and am confident I will be back in the ring before the year is up," De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya has been a boxing promoter since retiring.
