Former NBA, College Basketball Player Once Shot By Robber Charged With Illegal Gambling

A former Memphis Tigers basketball player was arraigned Tuesday on several gambling charges.

Antonio Burks was found to have in his possession two poker tables, chips, cards, ledgers, surveillance cameras, and placards reading "Burks Poker Palace Rules" after a search of his home, according to police.

They were also advised by at least one individual that Burks hosts poker parties two nights a week from his home.

Investigators said the Benoit Drive address in Memphis is just one of Burks' gambling properties.

Burks is out of jail on $1,000 bond. He is next scheduled for a court date on August 24th.

Burks also played for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2004 to 2006 and would later serve as an assistant coach for LeMoyne-Owen College in 2010.  He currently runs a lawn service company. 

On July 20, 2009, Burks was shot by a robber in Memphis. Burks underwent several surgeries and recovered in the hospital.  The suspect was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder.  He was sentenced to 97 years in prison.
